November 19, 2003 Kwanzaa celebration slated for Dec. 6 at Black Cultural CenterWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The lighting of candles and presentation of the seven principles of Kwanzaa will highlight the seventh annual Kwanzaa celebration at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, in Multipurpose Room 1 of Purdue's Black Cultural Center. A guest speaker will open the event with a talk on the place of the Kwanzaa celebration in the African-American community and the African-American community in general. Then, members of various organizations will light candles as they present the seven Kwanzaa principles, which are (in Swahili and English): umoja (unity), kujichagulia (self-determination), ujima (collective work and responsibility), ujamaa (business creativity), nia (purpose), kuumba (creativity in the community) and imani (faith). A reception will follow the presentation. The Kwanzaa celebration is sponsored by Purdue's Women of Vision, National Association of Colored Women's Clubs Inc. "Through words and lighting of the candles, Kwanzaa offers a message to everyone," says Donna Hall, Women of Vision adviser. "In previous years, people at Purdue and in the Lafayette community have embraced this celebration." Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday, traditionally celebrated from Dec. 26 to Jan.1, which was started in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, a professor at California State University, Long Beach. The Purdue Women of Vision Young Adult Club of the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs Inc. was founded and officially recognized as a campus organization in 1997. Its mission is to enrich lives through a variety of community service projects and activities in the Purdue and Lafayette/West Lafayette communities.
