Purdue College Republicans celebrate 100th year

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Shannon Reeves, California Republican secretary and Oakland NAACP president, will be the guest speaker on Tuesday (11/18) at the 100th anniversary celebration of the Purdue College Republicans.

A fund-raising dinner to benefit the Purdue College Republicans will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union North Ballroom, followed by Reeves' speech in Fowler Hall. The speech, which is part of the organization's annual Leslie Day, is free and open to the public.

The Purdue College Republicans group was founded in 1904 by the late Harry G. Leslie, a Purdue graduate and governor of Indiana. Every year, the organization celebrates Leslie Day in his honor. The organization is celebrating its centennial throughout the 2003-04 academic year.

A West Lafayette native, Leslie was the son of pioneer parents. While playing football for Purdue, he barely survived the 1903 train wreck in Indianapolis that killed 16 of his fellow team members. After several surgeries, he graduated and went on to earn a law degree from Indiana University.

Leslie practiced law in Lafayette, became involved in Tippecanoe County politics and was elected county treasurer in 1912 and 1914. He was a farmer, a bank president and served in the Indiana House of Representatives for four years before being elected governor in 1928.

Tickets to the dinner will be $35 in advance or $50 at the door. A $100-per-person reception will be in the Union Glass Room before the dinner. It is not necessary to attend the reception or dinner in order to hear Reeves' speech.
