Purdue Theatre presents Chekhov classic

WEST LAFAYETTE – Anton Chekhov's tragic-comic drama "The Cherry Orchard" will open on the Purdue Experimental Theatre stage on Thursday (11/13) for a 10-day run.

Chekhov satirizes the decline of a Russian family whose dire financial situation forces the auction of their beloved estate and its cherry orchard. The tale of the family's fortunes parallels the sea of social change in the early days of the Russian Revolution.

"This is a play that begins in the darkness of spring and ends in the bright of winter," says Richard Stockton Rand, Purdue theater professor and the play's director.

"It is a play of sweethearts and a play of broken hearts, a play of future hopes and of aching pasts, a play about the life force and the forces of nature, a play about fate and determinism. And finally, it is a comedy that is a tragedy."

"The Cherry Orchard" opens on Thursday (11/13) at 8 p.m. in the Experimental Theatre, Stewart Center. Additional performances will be at 8 p.m. on Nov. 14-15 and Nov. 18-22, with 2 p.m. matinees on Nov. 16 and 23. Tickets are on sale now at campus box offices.
