Extension educators awarded for team efforts

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service educators were presented awards for addressing women's issues in agriculture and bringing Extension to Warrick County elementary schools.

The educators were honored on Tuesday (10/21) during the annual Purdue Extension professional development conference on the West Lafayette campus. The awards were sponsored by the Indiana Extension Educators Association.

• Team members of the Midwest Women in Agriculture Conference received the Extension Team Award. Team members include Kelly Easterday, of Kosciusko County; Joan Younce, of Kosciusko County; Edie Sutton, of St. Joseph County; Phil Sutton, of St. Joseph County; Mary Ann Linehart-Cross, of Elkhart County; Karen Richey, of Marshall County; Walt Sell, of LaPorte County; and Annetta Jones, of LaPorte County.

According to the 1997 Census of Agriculture, 9 percent of U.S. farms are operated by women. To help these and other women, the team provided an educational source, the Midwest Women in Agriculture Conference. Approximately 250 women from four states attended the conference. Speakers addressed marketing farm products, diversified agriculture, working with a farm lender, the future of agriculture and several other topics.

• Purdue Extension of Warrick County staff received the H.A. Wadsworth County Staff Award for promoting Extension in Warrick County elementary schools. Educators include Gary Michel, Mary Lou Elbert and Carla Kidwell. The purpose of the program was to provide teachers with hands-on programs to promote school enrichment that met Indiana academic standards. There were programs on gardening, foods and nutrition, civics education, food safety, and agriculture. In the fall of 2002, six elementary schools delivered the programs to more than 2,000 students.
