October 24, 2003 Golden Taps ceremony to honor three studentsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A Golden Taps ceremony will be held on Monday (10/27) at 9 p.m. to honor and remember three Purdue students who passed away in the last six months. The simple public ceremony gives the Purdue community the opportunity to join with friends and family to honor the students who died. The ceremony on Monday will pay tribute to Andrew James Mauk, who died Aug. 16. He was a junior majoring in building construction management technology. His parents are Gregory and Susan Mauk of Fremont, Ind. Also honored will be Balaji Rangarajan, who died Aug. 26. He was a graduate student in the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Rangarajan Chennai of TamiNadu, India. The third student to be remembered is William Kirk Wilkinson, who died April 16. He was a graduate student in the English department. His mother is Jennifer Alexander of Brownwood, Texas. Golden Taps has been a tradition on campus since 1994. The ceremony, which lasts about 15 minutes, will be held on the steps of Hovde Hall. Two buglers and two drummers from the Purdue band will play "Echo Taps" and the "Purdue Hymn." The bell tower will ring once for each student who passed away. Family and friends attending should gather in the lobby of Schleman Hall 15 minutes before the ceremony, where Richard Clark, director of residential life, will greet them. A certificate of remembrance and a gold-colored rose will be presented to each of the families. The public is invited to attend.
