October 10, 2003 English lecture series honors former professorWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University English department's annual Leonora Woodman Lecture will be 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday (10/16) in Stewart Center, Room 206. Jay Fliegelman, the William Robertson Coe Professor of American Literature and Culture at Stanford University, is this year's Woodman lecturer. He will present "Belongings: Dramas of American Ownership, 1660-1860," which will feature his current research on objects of desire, the psychology of possession and the emotional relationship to books during the early history of the United States. The lecture is free and open to the public. "Fliegelman is well known for the energy and vitality he has brought to the study of American literacy and cultural history in numerous groundbreaking publications, including 'Prodigals and Pilgrims: The American Revolution Against Patriarchal Authority, 1750-1800,'" said Angelica Duran, assistant professor of English and this year's series coordinator. Fliegelman is the eighth Distinguished Woodman Lecturer in the series, which started in 1997 to honor Leonora Woodman, who played a central role in the development of the Purdue rhetoric and composition graduate program. Woodman, who died in 1991 after 15 years at Purdue, was nationally known for her publishing and teaching in American literature. "This series also is a time for the English department, and Hal Woodman, Leonora's husband and professor emeritus of history, to celebrate the intellectual legacy of Leonora Woodman," Duran said.
