2 students arrested for marijuana possession

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – University police arrested two Purdue students who were allegedly in possession of marijuana near a campus residence hall Tuesday (10/7) night.

Benjamin A. Gholston, 18, a freshman in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences from Hartsdale, N.Y., and Hee Jung "Michelle" Huh, 18, a freshman in the School of Health Sciences from Lake Zurich, Ill., were both arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana.

John Cox, captain of special services, said police responded to a report of the strong smell of marijuana outside of Harrison Hall shortly after 7:30 p.m. Officers found Huh and Gholston sitting on a picnic table outside of the residence hall.

Huh and Gholston both gave police bags of marijuana that they had in their pockets, amounting to 2 and 1.2 grams, respectively. They were booked into the Tippecanoe County Jail, where both posted bail.

"The amount of marijuana that each of them had in their possession is much less than you would expect to see with anyone dealing the drug," Cox said. "However, we take any form of drug violation very seriously. Drugs of any kind will not be tolerated at Purdue."

Possession of marijuana is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison and a $5,000 fine.
