Subjects sought for Purdue study on immune system

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A Purdue University health and kinesiology professor is looking for subjects to participate in a study about immune system differences between active and sedentary people.

Males and females, ages 18-35 or 65-90, are needed for the study, which is being conducted by Michael Flynn, director of the Wastl Human Performance Laboratory. Participants must either be healthy individuals who do not exercise and do not take hormone replacements or oral contraceptives, or adults who have exercised at least three days a week for the past year.

"This research will help us determine why endurance and weight-training exercise reduces the production of inflammatory proteins by blood cells focusing on toll-like receptors," said Flynn, a member of the Center on Aging and the Life Course. "Inflammatory proteins, which are mediated by toll-like receptors, are often linked to osteoporosis, Alzheimer's and heart disease, and regular exercise may influence the production of these proteins. A better understanding of inflammatory proteins and systemic inflammation in general, may help improve the quality of life for older adults."

After screening, participants will be required to follow a standard diet provided by the study for 24 hours, after which a blood sample will be taken.

For more information, or to participate, contact Flynn at (765) 494-3185. Participants will receive $25. The funding for this study is from the National Institutes on Aging and the American Heart Association.
