October 2, 2003 Audit finds irregularities in Purdue Extension office in Crawford CountyWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A Purdue University audit of the Crawford County Cooperative Extension Office has revealed financial irregularities, leading to the termination of the director, the university announced today (Thursday, 10/2). Sharon K. Broughton, was terminated from her position Sept. 11 after the university discovered she had violated university policies and procedures, said Joseph L. Bennett, vice president for university relations at Purdue. Bennett said Broughton used Purdue's name without authorization from the university. "Ms. Broughton obtained and processed grant funds from a variety of state agencies without Purdue's knowledge or authorization," Bennett said. "Purdue police are investigating, and university auditors will cooperate fully with the granting agencies involved," Bennett said. Broughton had been the Crawford County Extension director since May 1, 2000. She had been employed by Purdue since 1981. Nancy Casada, Extension director for Harrison County, will serve as Crawford County's interim director until a new Extension director is named. Purdue University provides administrative and fiscal oversight for all the state's Extension offices, which are located in all 92 Indiana counties. Purdue Extension, which provides scientific research-based information and education, is part of the Cooperative Extension Service, a network of colleges and universities and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
