Purdue awards alumnus for contributions to entomology

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Department of Entomology at Purdue University will award James Dill of Old Town, Maine, the John V. Osmun Alumni Professional Achievement Award in Entomology.

This award encourages, promotes and recognizes professionalism in entomology. Recipients can be employed in academia, industry, government, private or public enterprise.

"This is the highest honor the department confers to anyone," said Steve Yaninek, head of the entomology department. "Recipients then become spokespersons on our behalf."

Dill received his doctorate in entomology from Purdue in 1979. He is now employed by the University of Maine, where he is the associated program Extension administrator, pest management specialist, Extension professor and cooperating professor of entomology.

Dill will receive the award Friday (10/3) at a reception in Whistler Hall, Room116, following his seminar, "A Day in the Life of an Extension Entomologist." The seminar will take place at 2:30 p.m., with the reception and award ceremony to follow at 3:30 p.m.

"You take a look at his resume, and you will see he does every entomological thing for his university," Yaninek said. "He is the only one on staff with a degree in entomology."

His areas of activity at the university include integrated pest management, pesticide-applicator training and the National Agriculture Impact Assessment Program.

Dill has been recognized for his achievements by many organizations. His most recent awards are the Blue Ribbon Award for Outstanding Educational Aid, Distinguished Achievement Award in Extension Entomology and Who's Who Among Outstanding Americans.

He is also a member of the Entomological Society of America, the Maine Plant Food Educational Society and the American Association of Pesticide Safety Educators.
