September 25, 2003 Purdue Student Government sponsors forum on downloadingWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A forum on legal issues related to copying music, videos and other materials from the Internet will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday (9/30) in Purdue University’s Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. The forum, sponsored by the Purdue Student Government, is free and open to the public. A panel of experts will discuss current topics relevant to downloading Internet materials. Panelists include: • an attorney from Lafayette law firm Stuart & Branigin; • an information-technology analyst from Information Technology at Purdue (ItaP), who can address technical issues related to the use of ResNet and other Purdue-owned systems of hardware and software; • a Purdue University expert on copyright laws and issues; • an expert on "inforensics," the tracking of copyrighted materials that allegedly have been downloaded without authorization; • a student-conduct administrator from the Office of the Dean of Students who will explain how downloading violations are adjudicated at Purdue, and; • an engineering student who will discuss downloading issues from a student’s perspective. Bridget Williams Golden, leadership coordinator for the Office of the Dean of Students, said she anticipates a strong turnout for the forum. ""It is vitally important that students and all Internet users understand the issues related to downloading items from the Web," Golden said. "The music industry and others have promised to aggressively pursue and prosecute those who illegally download their copyrighted materials."' The experts also will field questions from the audience.
