September 25, 2003 Leading supporters gather for President's Council annual weekendWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –The Purdue President's Council — a group of leading university supporters — will gather Friday through Sunday (9/26-28) for a weekend of learning and activities. Events will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday (9/26) with an update on the university's strategic plan from President Martin C. Jischke, followed by a question-and-answer session. Back-to-class sessions will be offered from 9:15 a.m. — 4 p.m. from 30 different areas within the university, including presentations by experts from the schools of agriculture, consumer and family sciences, education, management, engineering, liberal arts, science, and technology. President's Council members also will be briefed by department heads from the Purdue Memorial Union, residences, bands, financial aid, housing and food services, libraries, Navy ROTC, and Purdue Musical Organizations. The sessions are designed to provide council members with new information about the workings of the university, in addition to educational advancements and discoveries in the schools and departments. Council members also are invited to attend the Biomedical Engineering Building groundbreaking ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on the front lawn of Herrick Labs. At 4:30 p.m., members can attend the unveiling of the Beering Sculpture to be dedicated outside the Steven C. Beering Hall of Liberal Arts and Education. On Friday, the annual President's Council dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union North and South ballrooms, where Distinguished Pinnacle awards will be presented. The Distinguished Pinnacle Award is awarded to council members in recognition of their leadership and gifts to the university. An 11:00 a.m. pregame brunch will be offered in the North and South ballrooms Saturday morning, prior to 2:30 p.m. kickoff of the Purdue-Notre Dame football game at Ross-Ade Stadium. Carolyn Gery, President's Council executive director and associate vice president of development, has been leading the council since its inception in 1972, when President Arthur G. Hansen gathered a small group of alumni and friends to form the President's Council to support Purdue. "This is one of the most fun weeks of the year for council members," Gery said. "Council members have a strong bond with Purdue, and together we all share a deep devotion to this university. So, it is truly a weekend of celebration, when we look forward to our alumni returning and gathering to learn about new things, share a wonderful dinner and enjoy Purdue football. " The President's Council includes more than 1,400 individual members. Members are alumni and friends who give a minimum of $1,000 annually to the university. More than 200 individuals are recognized as Distinguished Pinnacle recipients, who have given more than $1 million to the university. Writer: Jesica E.
