Dartmouth dean to address Purdue student leaders

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Stuart Lord, associate provost of Dartmouth College and dean of the William Jewett-Tucker Foundation, will present a lecture at Purdue University at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall.

The lecture, at which Lord will attempt to answer the question, "What happens when the beer runs out, the party is over, and you wake up?" is free and open to the public. The object of the presentation, sponsored by Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, is to develop a set of guiding principles within the Greek community.

Lord will address the stereotypes that persist about fraternity and sorority communities and challenge student leaders to develop well-rounded organizations. He also will provide advice on balancing the complex issues of scholarship, leadership, community service, growing diversity and peer accountability within student organizations.

"As participants in any Greek community, we are all responsible for seeking individually creative and innovative ways of emerging in campus life while simultaneously serving as stewards of a common set of values," Lord says.

At Dartmouth, Lord is responsible for overseeing programs that involve community service, religious life, social justice, civic responsibility and leadership development. Prior to becoming associate provost and dean at Dartmouth, Lord served as the associate dean and executive director of the Hartman Center for Civic Education and Leadership at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. When Lord arrived at DePauw in 1987, 25 percent of the students participated in community service. When Lord left in 2000, more than 93 percent of the student body volunteered in community service programs.

Lord received his undergraduate degree from Texas Christian University, where he was a student-athlete. His other degrees include a master of divinity and master of theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and a doctor of ministry from the United Theological Seminary. Lord's research interests include ethics and leadership, leadership practice and theory, AIDS education, multicultural education, and community research/service learning. Lord also is an alumnus initiate of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter at DePauw.

The Purdue chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon was founded in 1893. It will celebrate its 110th anniversary on the Purdue campus this year.
