September 22, 2003 Dayton Contemporary Dance Company to perform at PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – To celebrate Purdue University's contributions to flight and the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers' historic flight, the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, in Loeb Playhouse. Described as a "modern dance company rooted in the African-American experience," the DCDC will perform six flight-themed ballets that capture the magic and mystery of taking wing. DCDC artistic director Kevin Ward said Purdue is an ideal venue to celebrate the awe and splendor of flight. "From the mythic flight of Icarus to the momentous walk on the moon, flight has played a profound role in the history of thought and invention," Ward said. "Man has sought to be free of earthly restraint, to ascend to higher heights, reaching for what lies beyond. What better way to celebrate the triumph and dreams of flight than through the art of dance and with DCDC." The performance will include a piece choreographed by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, the founder of the Urban Bush Women. Other choreographers whose dances will be performed include Bill T. Jones, Bebe Miller, Dwight Rhoden, Doug Varone and Warren Spears. Admission to the performance, co-sponsored by Purdue Convocations and the Black Cultural Center, is $26 for the general public and $20 for Purdue students or children in kindergarten through 12th grade. The Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, which features 14 dancers from around the world, was founded in 1968 by the late Jeraldyne Blunden. The oldest modern dance company in Ohio, DCDC has the largest and most comprehensive repertory of classic works by African-American choreographers in the world. The company is known for its virtuoso dancing and its commitment to education and outreach initiatives.
