Poetry slam brings Shakespeare to public

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The English department is hosting Purdue University's first Shakespeare Poetry Slam at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 25.

Angelica Duran's undergraduate Shakespeare class, "The Play's the Thing," is organizing and presenting the poetry slam at Twice Turned Pages, 518-A Main St. The event is free and open to the public.

"The poetry slam fulfills my students' course requirement of bringing Shakespeare to the community," Duran said. "We want students to not only appreciate Shakespeare, but also employ their creativity and knowledge to help others understand this author's works.

"This will be a fun venue where the students get to be the teachers. We also will have special guest appearances by Shakespeare characters, including the Dark Lady, the Rival Poet, the Young Man and the Italian sonneteer Petrarch."

Some students will dress in Elizabethan costumes courtesy of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. The students have been coached by Richard Sullivan Lee, theater professor, on how to read the sonnets.

Coffee and breads also will be served. For more information, call (765) 496-3957 or (765) 742-4473.
