Purdue police arrest two on drug charges

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University Police Department today (Friday, 9/12) arrested two people on drug-related charges at an apartment in the Purdue Village.  

Dawanda A. Hughes, 19, of 212-13 Halsey Drive, was charged with maintaining a common nuisance, and Charles L. Stemley, 21, was charged with possession of marijuana under 30 grams and visiting a common nuisance after police responded to a report of the smell of marijuana coming from Hughes' apartment. Hughes is a student in Purdue's School of Agriculture. Stemley, who lives in Gary, Ind., is not a student.

According to John Cox, Purdue University Police Department captain of special services, a third person found in the house, Jermal L. Pinkins, 26, also of Gary, was in possession of a 9 mm handgun, which was registered to him. He was not arrested. However the gun was confiscated pending Pinkins' proving ownership. He is not a Purdue student.

Hughes and Stemley were both incarcerated in the Tippecanoe County Jail.

Maintaining a common nuisance is a class D felony punishable by up to three years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000; possession of marijuana under 30 grams is a class A misdemeanor with a maximum prison sentence of one year and a fine of up to $5,000; visting a common nuisance is a class B misdemeanor with a maximum 180-day sentence and a $1,000 maximum fine.
