The appointments to the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee were made by Tommy G. Thompson, Health and Human Service secretary, and Ann M. Veneman, U.S. Department of Agriculture secretary. Weaver was nominated for the panel by the American Society for Nutritional Sciences.

The nation's dietary guidelines are reexamined every five years to make sure they are up to date with the latest scientific and medical knowledge. Any government food program, such as school lunches, must comply with the guidelines.

Weaver is past president for the American Society for Nutritional Sciences. She has served on the National Academy of Sciences' Food and Nutrition Board as a panel member for the Dietary Reference Intake for Calcium and Related Nutrients.
