August 27, 2003 Purdue host site for North American philosophy meetingWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The North American Sartre Society, a group of philosophers and specialists in literature who share a common interest in the writings of Jean-Paul Sartre, will meet at Purdue University on Sept. 12-14 for its 13th biennial meeting. "The late Jean-Paul Sartre is one of the dominant intellectual figures of the mid-20 century," said Martin Beck Matustik, philosophy professor in the School of Liberal Arts. "As one of the leading political intellectuals in postwar France, Sartre is known for his existential writings, novels and plays." All sessions will be in Stewart Center, Room 218. About 60 philosophers are expect to attend the panel discussions and presentations about topics including art and aesthetics, ethics and action, Marxism, and death and existence. The day sessions are free and open to the public, and a registration form is available at the conference's Web site. Open sessions are 12:30-6:15 p.m. on Sept. 12, 9 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. on Sept. 13 and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 14. A Sept. 12 reception and a banquet on Sept. 13 are for registered participants. Joseph Catalano, professor emeritus of philosophy at Kean University of New Jersey and the author of several major books on Sartre's philosophy, is the keynote speaker at 5 p.m. on Sept. 12. There also will be a special guest presentation at 7 p.m. on Sept. 13 by Sally Swing Shelley, radio correspondent at the United Nations and author of the upcoming book "Sartre and I." Tom Flynn, professor of philosophy at Emory University, will speak at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 at a preconference event in Stewart Center, Room 214. Flynn will present "Foucault as Philosopher of Experience." William L. McBride, the Arthur G. Hansen Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Purdue, and the late Phyllis Morris, professor at the University of Michigan at Dearborn, founded the North American Sartre Society. The conference is sponsored by the English and philosophy doctorate program with support from the School of Liberal Arts.
