August 27, 2003 Purdue and Illinois join forces for Farm Progress ShowWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – On the football field they will always compete, but on an Illinois farm field, Purdue University and the University of Illinois will team up for the 2003 Farm Progress Show. This year's show, set for Sept. 23-25, will be near Henning Ill., just across the Indiana state line. "We were pleased that the University of Illinois asked us to join with them in showcasing our two institutions at this year's Farm Progress Show," said Victor Lechtenberg, dean of the Purdue School of Agriculture. "We have many cooperative efforts with our fellow land-grant university and will highlight ways that we work together." Featured partnerships between the two institutions will include the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant Program, site-specific farming efforts, the Five State Beef Initiative, the Bi-State Extension program and projects to combat obesity. "Our colleagues at Purdue are already solid partners in several projects, and we look forward to this opportunity to work together in the interests of Midwestern agriculture," said Robert Easter, dean of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at Illinois. Purdue and Illinois also will have exhibits on individual research and extension efforts. The two institutions combined will have displays covering 17 lots within the tent city. More information about the university exhibits may be found on the Web. This is the 50th anniversary for the Farm Progress Show, which was first held in 1953 on the Earl Bass farm, located about five miles from the site of this year's show. Purdue and Illinois also partnered together at that first show. The Farm Progress Show features the latest in agricultural advances and this year brings together the farm operations of the Peter Gernand and Scott Clark families, which encompasses 1,800 acres in Vermillion County, Ill.
