Memorial service to take place for Purdue engineering professor

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A memorial service will be conducted for Purdue University engineering professor Ray E. Eberts, 48, who was killed Aug. 4 in an automobile accident near Rockford, Ill.

The service will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, at the Central Presbyterian Church in Lafayette, Ind. The Rev. Ken Eimer will officiate. Speakers will include Linda Katehi, dean of the Schools of Engineering; Jason Papastavrou, former industrial engineering professor; Joe Micon, Lafayette Urban Ministry director; Sam Locke, a longtime friend; and Eberts' father, Harry, a retired Presbyterian minister.

Eberts, who joined the Purdue faculty in 1983, served as director of Continuing Engineering Education and was an associate professor of industrial engineering. He had been most recently assisting in the rebuilding of Kabul University in Afghanistan.

"Ray was an outstanding member of our faculty and a leader in expanding the distance education programs in the United States and overseas," Katehi said. "He will be missed as a colleague and friend."

The service is open to the public.
