Purdue field day provides beef producers info on adding value

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University will sponsor a field day from 3-6 p.m. on Aug. 21 to help beef producers learn ways to add value to their operations.

The Improving Marketing Strategies Field Day will be at the Dan Mulhern farm, 747 Liberty Baptist Church Road, Mitchell, Ind. Mulhern's livestock operation targets the lean beef market, which rewards producers for raising lean, high-quality beef.

Mulhern participates in the Integrated Resource Management program operated through Purdue. It is a cooperative effort including producers, veterinarians and Purdue Extension experts. The program's objective is to improve the competitiveness of Indiana's beef-forage producers.

"This is a great opportunity to learn about the different options besides taking the cattle to market," said Mark Hilton, Integrated Resource Management coordinator. "It's about adding value to calves, which, in turn, makes more profit."

The field day will include a panel discussion on freezer beef, marketing genetics, marketing preconditioned calves, marketing replacement heifers and seed stock. The discussion also will cover the Indiana Beef Evaluation and Economics Feeding Program (IBEEF), which provides Indiana producers a way to place cattle on feed and also gather performance, carcass and economic information to improve herd genetics and management.

A tour of Mulhern's farm also will be available. Immediately after the activities a rib eye sandwich meal will be served, and the cost is $5. Those wishing to attend the field day program should contact Debbie Stevenson at (765) 494-9234.
