August 6, 2003 Purdue experts hold informational sessions at Farm World ExpoWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –Visitors to the Farm World Expo on Aug. 19-21 can learn about the latest techniques in technology and farming during free seminars from Purdue University faculty and other experts. The Farm World Expo will take place at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds, located less than one-half mile south of I-70 on U.S. 41 in Terre Haute, Ind. "This year's event will be the largest outdoor farm show in Indiana, and we're very excited about hosting the expo," said David Blower, "Farm World" editor. "It gives us the chance to give something back to the people who have helped make our newspaper great – our readers and our advertisers." Purdue faculty, along with experts in their respective fields, will give seminars on all three days. "Purdue is the authority when it come to agricultural research and information in Indiana," Blower said. "We're extremely pleased to have Purdue experts involved." The presentations will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and each 20-minute session will be offered three times throughout the day. "Besides these educational sessions, visitors can also talk one-on-one with the presenters and other experts throughout the day," said Mark Evans, United States Department of Agriculture conservation program specialist. The Aug. 19 sessions will focus on crop production and soils: • 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. Putnam and Parke counties' tillage practices will be compared, and it will be shown how those practices relate to crop yield. Barry Fisher, conservation tillage coordinator from the USDA, will discuss this topic and managing cropping practices on the farm to improve soil quality. • 10:20 a.m., 11:20 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. Bob Nielsen, Purdue professor of agronomy, will discuss corn growth during the season and yield estimates. • 10:40 a.m., 11:40 a.m. and 12:40 p.m. Tony Vyn, Purdue professor of agronomy, will talk about his research on chisel plowing and its efficiency at distributing nutrients throughout the soil. • 1 p.m. Chris Hurt, Purdue professor of agricultural economics, will give the crop/livestock outlook. The Aug. 20 sessions will focus on cattle and forages: • 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. Keith Johnson, Purdue professor of agronomy, will discuss hay mower/conditioner calibration and how mower/conditioners need to be consistently calibrated along with planters. He also will show how this can improve forage quality. • 10:20 a.m., 11:20 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. An Illinois producer will explain how he uses Bermuda grass as an alternative forage in the warm, dry summer months. • 10:40 a.m., 11:40 a.m. and 12:40 p.m. Vic Shelton, of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, will discuss getting cattle out of creeks through alternative watering systems, and fencing and rotational grazing. The Aug. 21 sessions will focus on holly trees, ornamentals and wineries: • 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. Advanced Master Gardeners will demonstrate proper holly tree care and showcase management at a holly arboretum. • 10:20 a.m., 11:20 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. Grape wine production and contracting vineyards will be discussed. • 10:40 a.m., 11:40 a.m. and 12:40 p.m. Ornamental plant care and management will be outlined. Tom Turpin, Purdue professor of entomology, also will participate at the Farm World Expo. He writes the bi-weekly column "On Six Legs," which can be found in the "Farm World" newspaper. Turpin will speak at the Meet Your Favorite "Farm World" Columnist booth on Aug.19. This is the first Farm World Expo, and it features a used equipment auction, a livestock judging contest and auction, a farm life fashion show and other attractions for consumers.
