Former Purdue employee arrested on theft charges

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University police today (Friday, 8/1) arrested a former university employee for allegedly ordering more than $10,000 in computer and office supplies and selling them over the Internet.

Sharon Rae Huber, 31, 512 Ortman Lane, Lafayette, was arrested for theft and taken to Tippecanoe County Jail at 10:51 a.m. She was released after posting a $500 cash bond.

John Cox, Purdue police captain of special services, said Huber was arrested after a joint investigation with the Purdue Internal Audit Office that began in May. Cox said Huber, who worked for Purdue from July 2001 until May 2003, allegedly ordered a variety of office and computer supplies, including a printer.

She then allegedly sold most of the items over the Internet auction service eBay to buyers throughout the country and charged the shipping costs to her Purdue departmental shipping account. Huber was a secretary and authorized purchaser for Purdue's Computer Research Institute.

Cox said police recovered a printer and other office supplies in a search of Huber's home.

Theft is a Class D felony, punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
