July 17, 2003 Purdue awards full-ride scholarships to freshmen from IndianaWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Two incoming freshmen have been awarded one of Purdue University's most prestigious scholarships.
Joshua Tucker Robinson, an applied mathematics major from Evansville, Ind., and Gregory Lee Wilson, an engineering major from Granger, Ind., have received Beering Scholarships worth approximately $250,000. The scholarships will fund a bachelor's, master's and doctorate at Purdue or a medical degree from Indiana University. Robinson, a graduate of the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics and Humanities in Muncie, Ind., served as captain of the academy's cross country and track and field teams, which both honored him as most valuable player. He was elected co-president of the school's chapters of Business Professionals of America and the Modern Physics Society. Robinson also served as a peer assistant, peer tutor, Vacation Bible School counselor and religious education instructor. Robinson has been named an AP Scholar with Distinction, a National Merit Finalist and an Indiana Science Olympiad. He also was honored as the East Central Indiana Runner of the Year and received the Caltech Junior Signature Award.
Wilson, a graduate of Penn High School in Mishawaka, Ind., served as co-captain of the school's science academic super bowl, the math academic super bowl and the quiz bowl. He also participated in math competitions and marching band. Wilson has volunteered as a physics, calculus and chemistry tutor. He also volunteered with the Mishawaka-Penn Public Library and participated in various community service projects. Wilson has been named a National Merit finalist and was inducted into the National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society. He received an all-star award for his participation on the quiz bowl team and was awarded academic letters for various competitions. Wilson also was selected as a junior scholar in physics at Purdue. A total of 34 Beering Scholars currently attend Purdue. They were selected from students accepted for admission who possess the strongest academic credentials. Evaluation criteria include class rank, standardized test scores, grade point averages and strength of academic preparation. Beering, who served as Purdue's president from 1983 to 2000, established the scholarship in 1986 to attract students of the highest caliber to the university. The scholarship covers all college expenses for undergraduate and graduate study, including fees and tuition, room and board, books, and spending money.
