Gardening ideas blossom at Purdue Garden Day

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Gardeners will get the opportunity to dig into new gardening information and tour the horticulture gardens and greenhouse on July 19 during Purdue University Garden Day.

"It is a great occasion for gardeners to visit our gardens, ask questions and hopefully learn something new about gardening in general," said Rosie Lerner, Extension consumer horticulturist in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture.

Garden Day is free and open to the public. The annual open house takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Purdue Horticulture Building and Gardens on the West Lafayette campus.

The event includes guided tours of the ornamental gardens, a gardening information booth and gardening lectures presented by Purdue experts. There also will be morning tours of the horticulture greenhouses.

This year's ornamental garden features vertical flower columns adorned with annual bedding plants and vines. In addition, there will be many different perennials in their prime, including more than 40 cultivars of choice hosta and daylilies. Lerner said that with this year's cool, moist spring weather, hostas have come into their absolute peak.

The educational sessions will feature topics on garden diseases, nuisance critters and health-related aspects of gardening.

Lerner and the Tippecanoe County Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer gardening questions. Master Gardeners are volunteers with the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service.

The Purdue Horticulture Gardens are located adjacent to the Horticulture Building at Wood and Marsteller streets, just north of the School of Veterinary Medicine. There is free parking available for Garden Day participants on Marstellar Street, just east of the Horticulture Building and Gardens.

For more information or directions to the gardens contact Lerner at (765) 494-1296. Additional information can be found on the web.
