Purdue to unveil billboards on I-65 gateway to community

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University is unveiling new billboards that will welcome visitors to the campus and community in a way that ties into the new Lafayette-West Lafayette identity.

Mike Piggott, Purdue director for community relations, will unveil the designs at a meeting of the Lafayette Rotary at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday (6/24) at the University Inn. The billboards will be in place along Interstate 65 shortly before classes resume in August.

"The billboards are not only backlit with a three-dimensional model of the Purdue Bell Tower, but they also incorporate the new Lafayette-West Lafayette brand," Piggott said. "Incorporating the community brand into our materials is a way to show the university as an integral part of the community."

The new billboards will replace two existing ones that are more than 12 years old. Besides the Lafayette-West Lafayette brand, the billboards will also feature the new Purdue brand as they welcome visitors along the southern entrance into Tippecanoe County and the northern entrance into West Lafayette.

David Brannan, director of Purdue Marketing Communication, the office that designed the billboards, said using the three-dimensional bell tower as a focal part of the billboards is another step to establish the tower as the defining landmark on campus.

"The bell tower is featured prominently in the community's new brand, serving not only as a symbol for Purdue but for all of Lafayette-West Lafayette," said Brannan, who served on the community branding committee. "Now people coming to campus will be welcomed into the entire community, not just the university."
