Biological sciences prof named faculty athletic representative

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University President Martin C. Jischke has appointed a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences as the newest faculty athletic representative.

Jeffrey Bolin

Jeffrey T. Bolin has been appointed to the Athletic Affairs Committee for a five-year term, which begins July 1. In addition, Bolin will serve on the Big Ten Joint Group, which is composed of faculty representatives and athletic administrators from each university.

The 18-member Athletic Affairs Committee advises the athletic director and the president. It includes nine faculty members, two students, three alumni or community representatives, and four Intercollegiate Athletics Department members. The committee focuses its agenda on student-athlete welfare issues, with a special emphasis on academic performance.

Members meet with the president at least once a year to discuss and make recommendations concerning NCAA and Big Ten legislation, meet with coaches to discuss academic expectations, report annually to the University Senate, and recommend rules or policies pertaining to athletes. They also serve on ad hoc and search committees.

"The position is important to all of Purdue," Jischke said. "Faculty oversight of intercollegiate athletics is one of the keys to maintaining the high standards of which Purdue and the Big Ten are so proud. Jeff Bolin is both a distinguished scholar and an active member of the university community. I am delighted that he has accepted this responsibility."

Bolin has been a member of the biological sciences faculty for 17 years. He also is a member of Purdue's Markey Center for Structural Biology and the Purdue Cancer Center. His research concentrates on structural molecular biology and biochemistry, including the natural decomposition of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and other potentially hazardous industrial chemicals. He received his doctorate from the University of California at San Diego in 1982.
