Senior vocalists to participate in choral music workshop

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Adults who are at least 55 years old can fine-tune their vocal talent at the Elderhostel Choral Music Workshop Sunday through Saturday (6/15-21) at Purdue University.

During the weeklong workshop, participants will sing, rehearse and prepare choral arrangements under the direction of Brian Breed, Purdue Musical Organizations director. Breed, who oversees the Purdue Varsity Glee Club and the PMO Christmas Show, is a protégé of master choral director Fred Waring.

Participants may stay in an air-conditioned, on-campus residence hall or commute. The week will conclude with a free community concert in Hillenbrand Hall at 2 p.m. Friday, June 20.

Elderhostel coordinator Mary Gardner says the workshop remains a popular event to which the PMO staff looks forward each year.

"Most of our loyal fans think we are relaxing when June arrives, but the reality is quite the contrary," Gardner says. "We are just getting started, and Eldherhostel is always a highlight. Having friends back on campus, engaged in an intensive choral learning workshop, is music to our ears. These folks are here for music and fun, but they also become lifelong partners in our pursuit of musical excellence all year long."

Rex Hoppes, a mechanical engineering graduate who has been PMO Club member for almost a decade, says Elderhostel attendees return year after year.

"Attending the Elderhostel 'No Fun Without Music, No Music Without Fun' Choral group is one of the highlights of our year, " Hoppes says. "It's fun to learn new songs, and by the end of the week, to hear them sound so good. Our expectations for this week are to learn, make friends, laugh and just generally enjoy ourselves away from all the stress and worries of life."
