May 27, 2003 Infotex joins Purdue's CERIAS as security partner, sponsorWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Infotex Inc., an Indiana technology consulting firm specializing in information architecture, has joined with CERIAS, the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security at Purdue University, as a research and education partner. "We are pleased to have Infotex as our newest Indiana partner," said Teresa Bennett, director of strategic relations for CERIAS. "They have quickly become a valuable resource in our efforts to reach out to Indiana companies and citizens." The CERIAS Sponsor Program facilitates communication between the center and business and industry leaders, and provides early access for industry partners to CERIAS research, technology and graduates. "Sponsoring CERIAS is an opportunity to shape the future practices of information security, guide infosec professionals and keep up with emerging developments that will set the pace for tomorrow's business," Bennett said. "In turn, the sponsor program enhances the center's research and education programs through meaningful interaction with business and industry." CERIAS works with a number of national and international partners and sponsors but is attempting to increase the number of Indiana partners substantially over the next five years. Bennett said the goal is to demonstrate that Indiana is a leader in efforts to create awareness, educate future leaders, and develop new technologies and tools for information security, assurance and privacy. The partnership with Infotex went into effect April 1. Bennett said the company is already playing a critical role in CERIAS' education and awareness activities. In support of Information Security Week (April 6-12), Infotex conducted presentations related to information security for area parent-teacher groups and other parenting organizations; is providing assistance to five Indiana schools to perform formal security assessments; and is involved in other activities designed to enhance security literacy and skills among Indiana businesses, organizations and citizens. "Information security is not just a business process issue," said Dan Hadaway, president of Infotex. "All computers can be targeted for a variety of malicious activities, ranging from identity theft to virus attacks to vandalism. With these talks and services, we hope to help parents and educators understand information security and privacy issues." Matthew Jonkman, who is heading the school program, said the issue goes beyond increasing the awareness and practice of information security. "We also want to help students recognize the ethics of information security," Jonkman said. "We want to encourage the notion that it's no longer cool to hack into a system." Infotex, short for Information Architects, was founded by Bucheri McCarty & Metz LLP, an accounting firm that has served central Indiana since 1978. Infotex provides project-based information architecture services to small and medium-sized businesses by combining the accounting, technology and design disciplines to increase the value of information. Infotex has Indiana offices in Kokomo, Lafayette and Wabash. CERIAS (pronounced serious) is a multidisciplinary academic center for information assurance and security. With more than 100 involved faculty and students at Purdue and affiliate universities, CERIAS is able to interact with business, industry and government to conduct research in areas that include privacy, forensics, cyber-crime and national defense. The center also supports K-12 resources for Indiana teachers and students, a graduate curriculum in information security, and continuing education programs and self-paced learning products.
