May 23, 2003 Goldwater scholarships awarded to Purdue University studentsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Two Purdue University students have received the Goldwater Scholarship, a prestigious undergraduate award issued to students who excel in the fields of math, science or engineering. Damir D. Dzhafarov, a math major from Lafayette, Ind., and Anke M. Mulder, a biology and chemistry major from Winchester, Ind., each received a one- or two-year scholarship that will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. Dzhafarov, a sophomore, plans to pursue a doctorate in pure mathematics. His research focuses on set theory and mathematical logic. Mulder, a junior, plans to pursue a doctorate in structural biology or biophysics. The Goldwater Scholarship was awarded to 300 college sophomores and juniors from a field of 1,000 applicants from throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Goldwater, who served 30 years in the U.S. Senate.
