May 22, 2003 Dietrich takes over as Purdue's interim police chiefWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Capt. Steven R. Dietrich has been appointed interim chief of the Purdue University Police Department, effective today (Thursday, 5/22).
Dietrich will assume chief's duties while the university conducts a national search for a successor to Chief Linda Stump, said Carol Shelby, Purdue's senior director of environmental health and public safety. Stump recently announced that in July she will resign from Purdue to become chief of police at the University of Florida. Dietrich, who has served as captain since 1989, is a West Lafayette native. He graduated from West Lafayette High School and Purdue, earning a bachelor's degree in criminology and criminal justice. He joined the Purdue police in 1984 and previously was a detective, detective sergeant and detective lieutenant. From 1982 to 1984, he was a deputy with the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department. "Chief Stump has been a tremendous asset for Purdue in her 18 years as a member of the police department," Shelby said. "We wish her great success at the University of Florida. I know that Capt. Dietrich will be able to provide the leadership needed during this transition period in the Purdue Police Department." Until she leaves for her new position, Stump will provide transition for several programs with departments that partner with the police department, including the Office of the Dean of Students, the Affirmative Action Office and Human Resource Services. The Purdue Police Department employs 47 staff members, which includes 39 sworn officers. The department is involved with educational and proactive programs on campus and throughout the community.
