Glee Club offers variety of favorites in final concert

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue Varsity Glee Club will perform a variety of songs during its end of season grand finale concert on Saturday, May 17.

The performance will begin at 8:30 p.m. in the Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center. Admission is $10 for students and $12 for the general public. Tickets are available at the Loeb and Elliott Hall of Music box offices or by calling (765) 494-3933.

Brian Breed, Purdue Musical Organizations director, says variety will be the mainstay of the fast-paced program, which will include selections from the club's performance at Carnegie Hall last winter.

"Randall Thompson's 'Testament of Freedom' will be featured, in addition to the best of the best from the Glee Club's more than 100 appearances throughout the country over the past year," Breed says. "Material performed will include everything from renditions of all-America anthems to touching arrangements of hymn tunes. Contemporary representations of familiar songs and classics of Broadway and opera will always find their way into a glee club end of season performance."

Featured soloists include Freshman of the Year Award winner Chris Myers of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.,  Joey Martin Jr. of Walton, Ind., and sophomore Joel Brovont of Rossville, Ind. Performances by smaller ensembles also will be featured. They include the gospel quartet "Lighthouse," a country trio called "Hi-tech Rednecks" and the pop vocal ensemble "Voiceovers." Nostalgia in song will be recalled by the "4-Clever Lads" group. The doo-wop group "Banana" also will perform.

Breed says the Glee Club looks forward to this performance every year.

"End of season is the culmination of an entire year of performances all across the country, around the state and right here on campus," he says. "It's a favorite for our new graduates, alumni, families and our commencement weekend guests and regulars to enjoy the unmatched talents of our outstanding student performers."

Breed says that while the glee club logs many travel miles, its members always enjoy performing on campus.

"This group of 50 young men and the professional staff of the Purdue Varsity Glee Club believe in making as many friends forPurdue University as possible every year all over the world," Breed says. "It is always a thrill to have the opportunity to bring it all home and share a love of Purdue and excellence in entertainment at this special time of year. It truly reminds us that the spirit of Purdue is alive and well through the dedication and efforts of these remarkable student performers."
