May 2, 2003 Purdue Alumni Association honors alumni for community serviceWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –The Purdue Alumni Association presented its 2003 Citizenship Award to three alumni who have devoted many hours of service to their communities. Audrey McMillan Cole is a 1982 graduate of the School of Agriculture. A resident of Alexandria, Ind., McMillan Cole works as a veterinarian and has been an active volunteer with the Ulster Project of Anderson, of which she is president. McMillan Cole oversees the international peace project that brings Catholic and Protestant teens from Ireland and pairs them with host families in the community. The project involves the teens in service projects, socializing and religious services to show alternatives to violence. In addition, McMillan Cole is active in the Boy Scouts and has been scout master of Troop 253 in Anderson since 1997. Gary Stuckey, of Odon, Ind., received his bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 1979. He continued his studies at Purdue and earned his master’s degree in education in 1983. Stuckey has been working with students as an agricultural science and business teacher at North Daviess High School for nearly 20 years. He also has served as the Young Farmers adviser and has assisted the members in earning several awards. He was a national finalist as Outstanding Young Farmer Adviser in 2002. In addition, he has served as the North Daviess Future Farmers of America adviser for nearly 20 years and was recognized for his efforts by being awarded the Indiana Young Ag Teacher of the Year. Stuckey also has been an active volunteer with the Odon United Methodist Church, the Raglesville Lions Club and the Daviess County 4-H. James Thomas, of Greencastle, Ind., earned his bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Purdue in 1948. He continued to earn his master’s degree in 1952 and doctorate in 1960. A professor emeritus of education of West Virginia State College, Thomas has dedicated his life to serving others. His volunteer interests have included the State and County Retired Teachers Association, where he has endowed a scholarship fund for students from his high school. Thomas also has been involved in scouting, Future Farmers of America, the American Legion Post 58, United Way, the Rotary Club and the First Christian Church.
