Purdue Police Department promotes Cox to captain

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Capt. John Cox has been named the Purdue University Police Department's captain of special services.

Purdue police chief Linda Stump announced that Cox will succeed Capt. Ron Fosnaugh, who is retiring in July. Cox's appointment is effective May 1.

The captain of special services acts as the main outreach coordinator for the department. Besides managing the student patrol, Cox will be the liaison between the Purdue police and other departments within the university, law enforcement at other universities and the public. The captain of special services also works closely with Purdue students in education and crime-prevention efforts.

"Capt. Cox is an outstanding police officer," Stump said. "He has been an asset to the Purdue Police Department since his arrival in 2000, and with more duties he will be an even bigger asset to the Purdue community.."

Cox is a three-year veteran of the Purdue Police Department, where he served as lieutenant of special services before his promotion. While at Purdue, he has worked extensively with the department's evidence collection and management, heading crime-scene investigation and the evidence room. He also wrote a new policy for training officers in evidence collection, crime scene management and digital photography.

Cox also oversaw departmental training and acted as a liaison between the police and other departments in the university.

Cox began his law enforcement career with the West Lafayette Police Department, where he worked as an evidence technician and police officer from 1987 to 2000. At West Lafayette, he served as the department's public relations officer, as well as managing the department's vehicle maintenance. He was also responsible for management of the evidence room and all aspects of crime scene management and processing.

Fosnaugh will retire July 11 after 33 years of service.
