African-American undergraduates to be honored

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Nearly 200 Purdue University undergraduate students will be recognized Saturday (4/26) during the 28th annual Academic & Services Awards program.

The awards ceremony, sponsored by the Purdue Black Alumni Organization and members of the Purdue black faculty and staff, begins at 1 p.m. in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. Pervis Bearden, PBAO vice president, Purdue Alumni Association board member and project manager at Procter & Gamble, will serve as keynote speaker.

Certificates will be presented to all students for academic achievement, service and leadership. Small cash awards will be given to the student with the highest overall GPA in each classification.

The Clara E. Bell Academic Achievement Award will be presented to Melanie B. Gatewood, a senior in health sciences from Indianapolis. The award is to honor the senior in nursing or health sciences with the highest GPA. Clara E. Bell, for whom the award was named, was a professor emerita and former director of continuing education in nursing who was an active member of the Purdue University Black Caucus of Faculty and Staff.

A special recognition award also will be presented to the National Society of Black Engineers for its service to Purdue students.

A reception for the students and their parents will take place at the Black Cultural Center following the ceremony.
