For additional information, call (765) 494-8396 April 18: Agricultural Research Award CeremonyArun Bhunia will be honored at 2 p.m. in Whistler Hall, Room 116, for his research on pathogens. Bhunia is a microbiologist in Purdue's Department of Food Science. This award is given each year to a Purdue researcher that has received a doctorate within the last 15 years, and consists of a plaque, $1,000 honorarium and $5,000 for the recipient's research program. At the ceremony, Bhunia will give a seminar on his research, "Exploiting Pathogenic Signatures of Listeria monocytogenes for the Development of Biosensor-Based Detection Tools." A reception will follow the seminar. The event is free and open to the public. April 23: Financial Security In Later Life ConferencePurdue Extension will host a conference on financial security and planning. This conference will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST. It can be viewed at 11 sites across Indiana: Marion County Extension office, Allen County Extension office, Ivy Tech State College in Terre Haute, Ivy Tech State College in Muncie, Tippecanoe County Extension office, Bartholomew County Extension office, Orange County Extension office, Clark County Extension office, Lawrenceburg Public Library, Vanderburgh County 4-H Center and Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds. A live teleconference will be at each site from 10:30 a.m. to noon, with presentations from Jane Schuchardt, national program leader for the USDA Cooperative State Research, Education, Extension Service, and Indiana State Treasurer Tim Berry. Schuchardt will present "Positioning for Success." Part of her message will deal with preparing for the future while keeping pace with today's obligations. Berry will present "Are you Motivated to be Financially Secure?" He will cover the wise use of credit, saving, planning for life's unexpected events and retirement planning. Local experts will give presentations in the afternoon. The topics to be discussed include conversations between generations, retirement planning and the best road to travel to reach financial security. Registration is $35 and is due by April 11. April 25: Distinguished Agricultural Alumni Awards CeremonyThe Distinguished Agricultural Alumni Award recipients will be honored at 9:30 a.m. in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. This year's recipients include William Carteaux of Strongsville, Ohio; Burnell Fischer of Indianapolis; Albert Lund of Newark, Del.; Evandro Chartuni Mantovani of Sete Lagoas, Brazil; Bret Marsh of Indianapolis; Kenneth Rulon of Cicero, Ind.; Janice Cervelli Schach of Clemson, S.C.; Sharrann Simmons of Wayne, N.J.; and J. Yun Tso of Fremont, Calif. Each award winner will give a presentation on their accomplishments. Purdue President Martin C. Jischke also will speak. This event is free and open to the public. June 3: Media Day For Farm Management TourMedia writing advance stories about the Farm Management Tour can have a special tour of the farms. At each farm, the media will have the chance to ask the presenters questions and learn about the farm operations. This tour is only for news reporters and will cover farms in the Montgomery and Putnam counties. The Montgomery County locations include Cain's Homelike Farm, Darlington, Ind., and Sennett Cattle Company, Waynetown, Ind. The Putnam County locations include Legan Livestock and Grain, Coatesville, Ind.; McCammack Farms, Cloverdale, Ind.; and White Oak Farms, Cloverdale, Ind. June 7: Vintage Indiana Wine And Food FestivalThe Indiana Wine Grape Council will hold the festival from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Military Park in downtown Indianapolis. Participants can sample and purchase wines from 15 Indiana wineries, dance to live music and eat food prepared by Indiana's top chefs. Children can visit the interactive KidZone, which includes a bounce house and a clown. Registration is $15 in advance for adults (age 21 and over) and $18 at the gate. Food and wine by the glass or bottle are not included in the admission price. Designated driver tickets also are available for $8 at the gate and in advance and include unlimited soft drinks. Children ages 5 and under are free. Tickets go on sale May 1 at Marsh Supermarkets and participating wineries, or can be purchased now online. A list of participating wineries can be found on the Web site. The first 10,000 adult ticket holders will receive a free etched wineglass. A Vintage Indiana Overnight Package at the Downtown Marriott, located just two blocks from the festival, also is available for $92.30. The package includes a room for Saturday evening, two adult tickets to Vintage Indiana, a dinner gift certificate for the Circle City Bar and Grille, and discounts at Circle Centre Mall.
