Girls explore high-tech careers at Purdue camp

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Applications are being accepted for a summer camp that enables middle school girls to explore careers in engineering and technology.

Love Engineering at Purdue (LEAP) will take place June 16-20 at Purdue University. Girls who have finished grades six or seven will participate in hands-on activities such as reconstructing a computer from its components, designing and programming a robot, and constructing a personal Web page.

The campers also will visit campus laboratories and tour a local industrial manufacturing facility. The week will conclude with a banquet to which families are invited.

The camp fee is $150. Girls also can be housed at Hillenbrand Hall for an extra $200, which includes additional evening programming. Scholarships are available for families with financial difficulties.

Applications, which consist of a form, a recommendation letter from a math or science teacher and a short essay, have a best consideration deadline of Friday, April 25. Registrations received after April 25 will be considered on a first-come basis and program availability.

The application is available on the Internet. For more information, contact Andrea Yeoman, Women in Engineering program secretary, at (765) 494-3889, puwie@ecn.purdue.edu.
