April 9, 2003 Seats still available for 'mini MBA' technical management programsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's Krannert Executive Education Programs is continuing its longstanding collaboration with the schools of Engineering and Science to offer two short-course "mini MBA" programs for engineers and scientists in May and June.
The Purdue Engineering/Management (E/M) program is an intensive, on-campus residential program that takes place May 5-9. The one-week program is designed for experienced (at least five years) engineers, scientists, technical specialists and engineering managers to update their engineering and management skills. This year, for the first time, Purdue administrative and professional staff members can enroll in individual classes in the program. Classes are taught by Krannert School of Management faculty, Purdue administrative staff and faculty from other universities. The E/M program is sponsored collaboratively by Purdue's Continuing Engineering Education. The Applied Management Principles program is designed for engineers and scientists with advanced degrees and positions in industry, as well as doctoral candidates, who wish to improve their business knowledge and skills. The two-week "mini-MBA" program takes place on campus May 28 through June 11. "Recently, Purdue was recognized as one of only a dozen major universities nationally that are leading the way in promoting technology-oriented community economic development in their states and communities," said Richard A. Cosier, Krannert School dean and Leeds Professor of Management. "I feel strongly that both the Engineering/Management and Applied Management Principles programs exemplify this mission of the Krannert School. In fact, I am so impressed with the programs that I will be co-teaching a course in one of my specialty areas – leadership – in this year's E/M program." Michael Sheahan, associate director of Krannert Executive Education Programs, said, "The proven Applied Management Principles program allows doctoral students to view their technical educations through the lens of business enterprise. "It also enables those with technical backgrounds who are already employed in industry to acquire the business acumen to make more informed and substantive contributions to their organizations." The Engineering/Management program, now in its 18th year, offers a range of courses from which participants can choose. The offerings include functional areas of management, including accounting and finance, marketing and strategy, as well as specialized topics in human resources, including management communication, leadership, negotiation and career management. The Applied Management Principles program offers classes in accounting, human resources, finance, marketing, strategic management and entrepreneurship. "Our Engineering/Management program allows participants to select four courses to attend from an integrated series of offerings," Sheahan said. "There are opportunities for participants to tailor the one-week educational experience to individual and company needs. "At the next level of programming, our Applied Management Principles program exposes participants to all the functional areas that constitute the MBA, but in a compressed two-week format during which all of the students take the classes as a group." The cost of the Engineering/Management program is $2,695. The cost of the Applied Management Principles program is $5,390. Program fees include course materials, accommodations at the Purdue Memorial Union Club Hotel and some meals. Individual classes in the Engineering/Management curriculum for Purdue administrative and professional staff members also are available. Tuition for an individual class is $500.
