U.S. News: Purdue engineering among top 10 in nation

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University graduate engineering programs ranked ninth overall in the nation, and seven individual programs were among the top 10 in a U.S.News & World Report survey released today (Friday, 4/4).

Purdue was tied with the University of Texas, Austin, based on data provided by 168 schools. Purdue had ranked 12th last year.

Individual graduate program rankings for Purdue were:

• Second, agricultural engineering (Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering).

• Third, industrial engineering.

• Sixth, aerospace (School of Aeronautics and Astronautics).

• Seventh, civil engineering.

• Seventh, mechanical engineering.

• Seventh, nuclear engineering.

• 10th, electrical/electronic engineering (School of Electrical and Computer Engineering).

• 16th, chemical engineering.

• 19th, materials engineering

In a separate ranking category, employers placed Purdue engineering among the top 10 in the nation.

"Purdue engineering continues to earn high marks from both academia and corporate recruiters, which is a result of the quality of our programs, students and faculty," said Linda P. B. Katehi, the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering at Purdue and a professor of electrical and computer engineering. "This is just further evidence that Purdue is a great place to learn about engineering."

Purdue's engineering program is among the largest in the United States. It encompasses 13 schools, departments and divisions, with 6,312 undergraduate students, 2,248 graduate students and about 270 faculty members.

Individual graduate program rankings were based solely on nominations from educators at peer institutions. To determine the overall rankings, the magazine used data provided by the institutions. The information was used to compare factors such as standardized test scores, applicant acceptance rates, the ratio of doctoral students to faculty, research expenditures and research spending per faculty member.

U.S.News & World Report will publish its complete rankings of graduate schools in its April 14 issue of "America's Best Graduate Schools," which will be available on newsstands Monday (4/7). The complete rankings and methodology also will be available Monday at U.S. News Online.
