Purdue students have Grand Prix week alternatives

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Finding fun won't be a problem for Purdue students during Grand Prix week – the only problem will be which of the 30 substance-free events to attend.

Grand Alternative 2003 is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students, with support from the Wesley Foundation, the Student Wellness Office and the Division of Recreational Sports, along with a grant from the Coalition for a Safe and Drug-Free Tippecanoe County. The events will take place during the week of April 20-27, highlighted by the Grand Prix kart race on Saturday, April 26.

The kickoff event is the Grand Prix Convocation at 7 p.m. Monday, April 14, in the Elliott Hall of Music. Sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students, Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association, the Purdue Cooperative Council and Alpha Tau Omega, the free event features keynote speaker Mike Green. A popular speaker, Green has delivered alcohol and drug awareness presentations at more than 2,000 campuses over the past 18 years

Other events include concerts, movies, athletic events, guest speakers, tournaments, inflatable games, free food and Grand Prix race activities.

Kristin Bair, Grand Alternative coordinator, says the event is becoming part of the mainstream culture at Purdue.

"We are seeing a growth in the number of organizations getting involved, which has increased the amount of activities and student participation from previous years," Bair says. "Grand Alternative events provide students with safe environments that allow them to unwind before the last week of classes and final exams."

Grand Alternative began five years ago as a single party sponsored by the Wesley Foundation.
