Purdue Theatre presents 'Anton in Show Business'

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Audiences can take a step backstage for a glimpse at the machinations involved behind the scenes in Purdue Theatre's Studio Season presentation of Jane Martin's "Anton in Show Business."

Purdue Theatre will perform the play April 3-13 in the Black Box Theatre, Creative Arts Building 3. Anne Fliotsos will direct the production.

The drama is based on a fictional regional theater in Texas that struggles to mount a production of Chekhov's "Three Sisters." The play features a TV sexpot, a young Texas school teacher with dreams of greatness and a jaded theater actress. Fliotsos says "Anton in Show Business" offers many comical moments to be savored by the audience.

"Playwrights are truly writing about what they know best when writing about producing theater," Fliotsos says. "The payoff for the audience is a look at how theater artists see their profession: at once ludicrous, insane, impossible and beloved. This show is about the love of theater and the reason we pursue it at all costs."

A tribute to the art form, "Anton in Show Business" played at the 2000 Humana Festival of New American Plays.

Tickets are $5.50 and can be purchased at the Loeb Box Office, Stewart Center, or by calling (765) 494-3933. Out-of-town patrons can call toll-free at (800) 914-SHOW. Performances are at 8 p.m. on April 3-5 and 10-12, with matinees at 2 p.m. on April 5-6 and 12-13.
