March 27, 2003 Women in Engineering invites high school juniors to Preview DayWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – High school juniors who are interested in studying engineering can attend the Women in Engineering Preview Day, which will take place Monday, April 14, at Purdue University. The free event, which runs from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., is sponsored by the Schools of Engineering, the Society of Women Engineers, Alcoa and General Motors. It will provide an overview of engineering, along with specific information on various engineering fields. Engineering professors and students will present lectures and demonstrations. Carrie Beckort, of Cummins Inc. in Columbus, Ind., who graduated from Purdue in 1996 with a degree in mechanical engineering, will deliver a keynote speech. Other practicing women engineers and women engineering students will participate in panel discussions. A special session on financial aid and a question-and-answer session with Beth Holloway, director of the Women in Engineering program, also will be offered. Holloway says high school teachers, students and their parents are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to become more familiar with a potential career in engineering. "This presents an ideal opportunity for questions on the opportunities of engineering majors and women in the work force," Holloway says. Lunch is included.
