Peace studies group brings author to campus

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Phyllis Bennis, fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C., will present "War in Iraq: National Security or Empire?" at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 7, in the Loeb Playhouse at Purdue University.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Purdue's Committee on Peace Studies.

Bennis is affiliated with the Transnational Institute in Amsterdam and is an editor of the Middle East Research and Information Project's Middle East Report. Bennis' newest book is "Before and After: U.S. Foreign Policy and the September 11th Crisis" (Interlink Publishing, 2002). She also is the author of "Calling the Shots: How Washington Dominates Today's UN" (Interlink, 2000). Her earlier books include "From Stones to Statehood: The Palestinian Uprising," "Altered States: A Reader in the New World Order," and "Beyond the Storm: A Gulf Crisis Reader."

Bennis appears frequently as a commentator and analyst on U.S. and international television and radio programs, most recently on "The News Hour with Jim Lehrer" on PBS, NPR's "Diane Rehm Show," "The Donahue Show" on MSNBC, and programs on CNN, Fox, CBC, BBC and al-Jazeera TV. She has testified in numerous U.S. congressional hearings on Iraq and other issues.

Bennis has spoken at United Nations' forums, meetings of non-governmental organizations and on college campuses. She regularly publishes in newspapers and magazines around the world on U. S. foreign policy, the Middle East and U.S.-United Nations relations.
