Black Voices of Inspiration perform gospel music at spring concert

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University Black Cultural Center's Black Voices of Inspiration choral ensemble will perform a spring concert, entitled "Afro-American Gospel Music: Reflecting the Decades," at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, in Loeb Playhouse.

The ensemble, under the direction of Geoffrey Kelsaw, BCC artist in-residence, will perform gospel music from the 1930s and '40s in addition to contemporary gospel music. The music will reflect the disparity between contemporary gospel music and traditional gospel music as experienced in the '30s and the 21st century.

Olateju Omolodun, BCC assistant director, says the performance will be uplifting.

"The selections will reveal cross-influences between the gospel music genre and popular secular music," Omolodun says. "The songs will entertain and enlighten both younger and older audiences."

Tickets, which are $5 for students and $7 for the public, can be purchased by calling the Loeb box office at (765) 494-3933.
