March 21, 2003 IndoFest to showcase Indonesian culture WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Indonesian Student Association at Purdue University will present its third IndoFest from 1-2:30 p.m. on March 30 in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. "This performance is an opportunity for more than 400 Indonesian students at Purdue to introduce their culture to Americans," said Andy Hartono, an IndoFest coordinator and junior in food science from Jakarta, Indonesia. Purdue students and performers from Chicago will present traditional Indonesian entertainment, including wayang (a shadow puppet show) and angklung (bamboo bell). An angklung is a traditional Indonesian instrument that is made from bamboo and sounds like a doorbell when played. A team of 14 angklung performers is needed to play an entire scale of notes. The event is sponsored by the Indonesian Student Association and the Purdue Student Union Board. In addition to students, other contributing artists include I Gusti Ngurah Kertayuda from Bali and Paguyuban Warga Katolik Indonesia in Chicago. The Indonesian Student Association also participates in the fall Global Fest and organizes social activities, such as ski trips and paint ball, for students on campus. IndoFest tickets are $6 for students and $8 for the general public, and are available at the door. Tickets also can be purchased from Purdue Box Offices.
