Scientific society sponsors awards banquet

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, will honor an outstanding scientist from Purdue at its initiation and awards banquet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, in the Purdue Memorial Union Faculty Lounges.

Ei-ichi Negishi, the Herbert C. Brown Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, will be honored as the 50th recipient of the Sigma Xi Faculty Research Award for his innovative research in organic chemistry. Other faculty members, staff and graduate students will be initiated into the society. Graduate students also will be recognized for their efforts in science, engineering and technology. An area high school teacher, who teaches math and science, also will receive an award.

Purdue President Martin C. Jischke will serve as the keynote speaker for the banquet. His address is entitled "Research at Purdue to Meet the Challenges of the 21st Century."

Sigma Xi chapter president Augustine Peter, a professor in the School of Veterinary Medicine, says the society is pleased to recognize those who make their mark in the scientific community.

"The interdisciplinary nature of Sigma Xi makes it a unique and vibrant organization and allows its members to encourage science, engineering and technology at all levels," he says.
