Purdue Agriculture Events Weeks: 3/11/03 - 4/13/03 For additional information, call (765) 494-8396 March 11-12: Midwest Women In Agriculture Conference Purdue Extension is sponsoring this conference at the Swan Lake Resort, located at 5203 Plymouth-LaPorte Trail in Plymouth, Ind. Keynote speaker Ron Hanson, professor of agribusiness at the University of Nebraska, will talk about "The Unspoken Words of a Farm Family" and the importance of family communication. Radio talk show host Kendra Smiley will talk about eliminating stress and improving self-esteem. This conference is not only for women on family farms but women involved with any aspect of agriculture. Participants can register for one or both days of the conference. Registration prior to the event is $70 for both days or $35 for March 11 and $60 for March 12. On-site registration is $100. March 11, 13: Estate And Business Transfer Planning: Individuals, Spouses And Family Businesses Purdue's Department of Agricultural Economics, Purdue Cooperative Extension in Rush County and the Rush County Community Foundation will hold meetings aimed at business owners. Participants can attend the sessions on March 11 and 13 from 7-9:30 p.m. EST at the Rush County Fairgrounds in the Root Building, or on March 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hearthstone Restaurant in Metamora, Ind. The Rush County Fairgrounds is located at 1299 N. Sexton in Rushville, Ind., and the Hearthstone Restaurant is located at 18149 U.S. 52. Gerald Harrison, Purdue agricultural economics professor, will be the lecturer. He has taught estate planning, federal income tax and agriculture law at Purdue and co-authored the book "Indiana Ag Law." Accountants, financial planners, lawyers and insurance agents who attend can earn continuing education credit. The two-part series will focus on planning, goals and objectives, property ownership law, probate, taxes, valuation of farmland, new family-owned business interest deductions, estate planning, buy-sell agreements and charitable planning. The fee is $20 per individual, $10 for the individual's spouse and $60 for professionals seeking continuing education credit. There is a $15 additional fee for each continuing education certification beyond the first. Registration must be received by March 10. The final stop of the show will take place at the Pinney-Purdue Agriculture Center, one-half mile north of U.S. 30 on the Porter-LaPorte county line road between Valparaiso and Wanatah. It will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon CST. Experts will give presentations on subjects that affect the dairy operation, including milk prices, cow management, the dairy check-off, marketing opportunities and waste management. Mike Schutz, Extension dairy specialist, will talk about the future price market for milk, marketing options and marketing tools. Don Jones, Purdue professor of agricultural and biological engineering, will discuss new regulations on animal waste management and the best ways to comply with them. Extension veterinarian Simon Kenyon's presentation on fresh cow management will focus on health maintenance and how to get a cow started on milk production. Associates of Milk Promotion Services Inc. will review dairy check-off initiatives and milk promotion in Indiana. The event is free, and prior registration is not required. April 12-13: Springfest This year's Springfest will be Saturday, April 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. The schools of Agriculture, Consumer and Family Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Science, Education, Liberal Arts, and Engineering will provide educational entertainment for youths and adults. Some of the new activities this year will allow visitors to solve a case like a forensic science detective, dress up in costumes like actors and actresses, build and launch a mini-rocket and create a charm with your name in hieroglyphics. Old favorites returning include Bug Bowl, Boiler Barnyard and many games and activities around campus. Visitors can obtain a map and a list of all the events online. Scavenger hunt questions also are posted so participants can print them off before coming to Springfest. All events are free and open to the public.
