4-H strikes up band, choral workshops in June

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana high school students have the opportunity to attend several workshops at Purdue University this year, including two that are geared toward the musically inclined.

The State 4-H Band Workshop is slated for June 21-23, while the State 4-H Choral Workshop is scheduled for June 21-25. Both events are at Purdue's West Lafayette campus.

"The band workshop is for youth who want to learn more about instrumental performance and techniques," said Pam Robbins, coordinator of the state 4-H band and choral workshops.

Bill Kisinger, associate professor of bands at Purdue, will direct the band workshop. Kisinger serves as an assistant to the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band and as conductor of the American Music Review and Lafayette Orchestra.

The State 4-H Choral Workshop is focused on singing, dancing and performing. The workshop is held in collaboration with the staff of Purdue Musical Organizations, under the direction of PMO director Brian Breed.

Robbins said both events will give youth the chance to meet new friends, stay on campus and perform in front of a large audience. The band will perform at 4-H Round-Up on June 23. The chorus will perform two shows on June 25: one at 4-H Round-Up and the other a community concert in West Lafayette. In addition, the chorus performs at the Indiana State Fair in August.

Participants are selected based on their application and the recommendation of their musical instructors. Participation is open to all youth and 4-H enrollment is not mandatory. Applicants should be entering high school or currently in high school. Consideration will be given to youth entering eighth grade.

Cost to attend is $125 for the band workshop and $150 for the choral workshop. Both include registration, lodging, three meals and a performance shirt. Robbins said participants are responsible for the remainder of their meals, transportation to West Lafayette, incidentals and remainder of the performance uniform.

Registration forms are available at local Purdue Extension offices and via the Internet at https://www.four-h.purdue.edu and https://www.purdue.edu/PMO.
