March 4, 2003 Purdue reorganizes enrollment effort, appoints deanWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University has established a new Office of Enrollment Management within its student services area to enhance coordination among all West Lafayette campus units that influence, or are affected by, enrollment.
Douglas Christiansen, former assistant vice president for enrollment services and director of admissions and records, has been named assistant vice president for enrollment management and dean of admissions in the reorganization. Purdue Provost Sally Frost Mason said the new office will help the university achieve goals defined in its strategic plan. "Many of our strategic goals for learning are related to enrollment," Mason said. "The various units being realigned in this new organizational structure already work toward complementary enrollment goals. This new structure is designed to optimize communication and collaboration among the units. "And we are fortunate to have Doug Christiansen leading this new organization. He brings a thorough understanding of how these units can work together to reach our goals, and he already has achieved a distinguished record of leadership at Purdue." The reorganization does not eliminate any offices, units or personnel, but establishes newly defined organizational relationships among units.
Orientation and New Student Programs and the offices of admissions and the registrar, which had functioned under the leadership of enrollment services in the past, will continue to report to the Office of Enrollment Management. In addition, the Division of Financial Aid will now report to the Office of Enrollment Management. Joyce Hall, the division's former director, has been promoted to its executive director in the reorganization. Within the Office of Admissions, Jo Ann Brown and Mitch Warren have been promoted from associate directors to senior associate directors as they take on greater day-to-day responsibilities within admissions. The new Office of Enrollment Management structure also features heightened coordination with the admission systems at all Purdue campuses and the Statewide Technology Program. "The university is committed to providing all qualified Indiana students the opportunity to get a Purdue education, whether that be at West Lafayette, Calumet, Purdue North Central, Fort Wayne or through our Statewide Technology Program," Christiansen said. "By elevating the coordination of admissions at all our campuses, we'll be even better equipped to do that." As part of that effort, Thom Golden has been named enrollment management and projects coordinator in addition to his title of assistant director of admissions. He will work with directors of Statewide Technology to coordinate admissions, financial aid, registration and student billing. Patti Dulik is being promoted to the associate director in the area of orientation and new student programs. In her new role, Dulik, formerly senior assistant director, will be responsible for the unit's day-to-day operation. New administrative associations also defined in the new organizational structure allow campus units with goals related to enrollment to work more closely with each other. Formal lines of communication are now drawn between the Office of Enrollment Management and the offices of Space Management and Academic Scheduling, International Students and Scholars, Graduate Admissions and Records, Learning Communities and Retention Initiatives, and the bursar. Effective coordination among these units is key, because the work of each unit can profoundly affect enrollment, Christiansen said. "Enrollment management is a great deal more than admissions," he said. "All staff and faculty touched by this new organization understand that it's about achieving diversity, enrolling the most qualified students, maximizing the impact of our scholarship dollars, helping students manage their tuition and fees, and staying on top of the university's physical and academic capacities. This retooling of our organization will generate a new synergy that can only help us meet our goals and get to the next level." Thomas Robinson, vice president for student services, said the new structure will build on momentum that already has begun. "Right now, Purdue is in the strongest position that it's ever been, and we want to build on that," he said. "This organizational structure will provide us the very best opportunity to meet the strategic plan goals."
