Appointments, promotions; campus activities; faculty and staff honors

Appointments and promotions
--------------------------

– Mike Trotter has been appointed director of customer care with Information Technology at Purdue (ITaP). He will continue to serve as executive director of the Center for Customer Driven Quality as part of a joint appointment with the School of Consumer and Family Sciences. Trotter has more than 12 years of experience managing and leading call centers and customer contact centers for companies including Charles Schwab and Fidelity Investments. His book, "The Customer Call Center Outback: A Frontline Supervisor's Map to Success," was published in 2002.

– Natalie Fowler has been named Southeast District interim director for Purdue Extension. She has served as an Extension director in Dearborn County for the past five years. She will begin her new duties on March 17 and serve until June 30, 2004, when a permanent director will be named.

– Lora Adams has accepted the position of director of development for the Krannert School of Management. Adams was the former director of annual giving for Visiting Nurse Service Inc., Indianapolis.

– Velma Jones has been named associate director for Telefund in annual giving. Jones, a 2002 Purdue graduate, previously worked as student supervisor for Telefund.

– Jeannie Wade has been named associate director for Telefund in annual giving. Wade previously worked as the Telefund's operations assistant.

– Don Fry, former director of development for Civil Engineering, has been appointed director of advancement for the Schools of Engineering. Fry's appointment is effective Monday (3/3).

– Alan Welch has been named assistant dean in the School of Science, effective immediately. As assistant dean, Welch will be responsible for overseeing the Office of Undergraduate Students, managing undergraduate student issues, programs and procedures. Welch previously served for approximately 10 years as director of science counseling.

– Barbara Clark has been named director and Regina Todd Hicks, associate director, of the Office of Diversity in the School of Science. Clark has been director of the Women in Science program since 1997, and will continue in that position as she assumes her new duties. Hicks also will continue in her current position as director of Multicultural Science Programs, which she has headed since 1989.

– Kauline Cipriani Davis has been appointed assistant director of Women in Science Programs in the School of Science. Davis received her master's degree in microbiology and genetics from Purdue in 1998 and plans to receive her doctorate in May, also from Purdue, in food sciences.

Campus activities

– The National Youth Sports Program presented Purdue University with an award for sponsoring its new NYSP camp. The program, run by staff and students in the Department of Health and Kinesiology, enabled more than 200 children from Greater Lafayette and surrounding areas to participate in five weeks of physical fitness and health education classes last summer that included swimming, tennis and soccer lessons. Purdue and Morgan State were presented with the award at the annual NYSP workshop at Walt Disney World.

Faculty and staff honors

– Jennifer E. Donahoe, adviser and assistant director of the Freshman Engineering Honors Program, and Muriel S. Keller, academic adviser for the School of Science, were recently presented with the Purdue Academic Advising Association's Outstanding Adviser Award. The association is a professional organization of academic advisers and student services personnel at Purdue.

– Jack Seifert, a Purdue Extension forester, was named the 2003 Conservationist of the Year by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. He was honored for teaching landowners how to improve their land and timber. Seifert produces the Woodland Steward newsletter and the National Walnut Council Bulletin. He's also active in dozens of forestry-related councils, committees and associations.

– John J. Contreni, interim dean of the Graduate School and professor of history in the School of Liberal Arts, has been elected a Fellow of the Medieval Academy. The honor is presented to those who have made notable contributions in their field. Contreni, who is an expert on Charlemagne and Carolingian Europe, has been at Purdue since 1971.
